How to Convert ICO to PPM

PPM (Portable Pixmap), part of the Netpbm family created in the late 1980s, stores full color images at 24 bits per pixel in a simple structure that's easy for command-line tools and research software to read directly. Most icon and design tools have no PPM support, and most Netpbm-based pipelines have no ICO support, so converting between the two is mainly relevant when an icon needs to be processed by a Unix-style image-processing tool that specifically expects PPM input.

This is an uncommon pairing, since icon design and Netpbm-based research tools serve almost entirely separate purposes, but the conversion process is straightforward.
