How to Convert PBM to GIF

PBM's strictly 1-bit-per-pixel storage and GIF's 256-color palette are both limited compared to modern formats, but GIF is far more broadly recognized and supported across web platforms and software today. Converting PBM to GIF is occasionally done when a bilevel document scan or pipeline output needs to display on a website or in software that specifically expects GIF rather than the text-friendly Netpbm format.

Since GIF's palette can represent far more than pure black and white, the converted file technically has room for more color depth than the original — but the image itself stays exactly as it was, since there's no color data in the source PBM to populate that extra capacity with.

1. Install Batchify Image Converter and Resizer Pro on your Windows PC.
