How to Convert PBM to PGM

PBM and PGM are both part of the Netpbm family, and PGM is actually a closely related concept to PBM's bilevel storage, since a 1-bit black-and-white image is essentially a grayscale image limited to its two most extreme values. Converting PBM to PGM is one of the more natural conversions in this matrix, mapping each black pixel to the darkest grayscale value and each white pixel to the lightest, with no intermediate shades to account for.

This is mainly used when a research tool, processing script, or computer vision pipeline specifically expects grayscale input in the PGM format rather than PBM's strictly bilevel structure, since PGM is more broadly supported across general-purpose and academic image-processing software.
