How to Convert PBM to PPM

PBM and PPM are both part of the Netpbm family, but they sit at opposite extremes — PBM is the simplest format in the family, storing each pixel as a single bit, either black or white, while PPM stores full 24-bit color. Converting PBM to PPM doesn't add color that wasn't in the original file; instead, each black or white pixel is mapped to an equivalent value represented in PPM's RGB structure, with the red, green, and blue channels all set the same.

This is mainly relevant when a specific tool or pipeline stage expects PPM input rather than PBM, even though the underlying image data remains pure black and white in appearance, such as a processing step that only accepts PPM regardless of whether the content needs color.
