How to Convert PPM to AVIF

PPM's uncompressed storage means even simple image content takes up far more space than necessary, while AVIF's AV1-based compression produces some of the smallest file sizes available for a given visual quality. Converting research or pipeline output from PPM to AVIF can shrink file sizes dramatically, which matters most once you're dealing with a large batch of PPM files generated by an automated process.
