How to Convert PPM to GIF

PPM stores full 24-bit color, while GIF is limited to a 256-color palette designed for simple web graphics, so converting a detailed PPM image with smooth gradients to GIF will visibly reduce color accuracy and can introduce dithering patterns where colors transition. For research output with limited or flat color variation, the difference is far less noticeable than for photographic content.

This conversion is occasionally needed for compatibility with older systems or specific platforms that only accept GIF as an input format, regardless of how much color detail the original PPM file contained.
