How to Convert PPM to PBM

PPM and PBM are both part of the Netpbm family, but they sit at opposite extremes — PPM stores full 24-bit color, while PBM is the simplest format in the family, storing each pixel as a single bit, either black or white, with no grayscale or color values at all. Converting PPM to PBM discards essentially all of the color and tonal detail the original file contained, typically applying a threshold to decide whether each pixel becomes black or white.

This is mainly relevant when a specific text-processing pipeline, fax-style document system, or Netpbm-based tool requires this minimal bilevel format as input, such as preparing a scanned document for OCR or simple pattern recognition where full color isn't needed.
